Friday’s loaded MLB slate is a great way to take us right into the weekend. If you’re looking to catch some games on TV tonight, you can find the St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (2:20 p.m. EST, MLB Network) and San Diego Padres at New York Mets (7:10 p.m. EST, MLB Network).
In my last article on Wednesday, I split the two games to bring my season-long record to 16-23 (-$740). Here are two more free MLB betting picks to get some extra weekend money.
Table of contents
San Diego Padres (+145) at New York Mets (-160) – Total: 6
SD: Blake Snell – L (2-2, 4.83 ERA/1.43 WHIP | 54 IP: 80 Ks, 8 HR)
NYM: Jacob deGrom – R (5-2, 0.62 ERA/0.57 WHIP | 58 IP, 93 Ks, 3 HR)
The 6-run total (even 5.5 in some places) is absolutely insane, but I think it gives us an insight as to where this game is going. We do have two studs on the mound tonight with Snell and deGrom, the latter being one of the best pitchers in MLB history.
To open the season, deGrom has posted his usual video-game-like numbers and banking on more compiling tonight. Now, the Mets moneyline is a little higher than we’d like, but I like the odds on taking a bigger leap here on the run-line. deGrom just saw this same Padres team in his last start and completely shut them down. It’s good too that New York has won each of deGrom’s last four starts by two runs or more. Not to mention, the Padres have scored two runs or fewer in four of their last five games while having to make the cross-country trip to face the best pitcher in the league.
Snell had his last outing against the Mets as well, and it was his best of the season. The lanky lefty allowed just one hit and one walk (no runs) over seven innings while striking out 10. However, unlike deGrom, I expect the opposition to catch up this time. Snell has really struggled on the road, posting a 9.70 ERA compared to 1.65 at home.
Betting Pick: Mets -1.5 (+135)
Atlanta Braves (-115) at Miami Marlins (+105) – Total: 7.5
ATL: Charlie Morton – R (5-2, 4.21 ERA/1.26 WHIP | 62 IP: 72 Ks, 7 HR)
MIA: Sandy Alcantara – R (3-5, 3.30 ERA/1.06 WHIP | 79 IP: 74 Ks, 8 HR)
The Marlins took three of four from the Braves in ATL earlier this season, and I believe they can do it again. Alcantara gets the ball for The Fish, and he’s had some success against current members of the Atlanta roster. Combined, current Braves are only hitting .170 against him with only five extra-base hits in 62 plate appearances. It’s also worth noting that Alcantara’s ERA at home (2.29) in much better than on the road (4.31).
Morton has looked a bit more human in his last two outings, albeit against talented lineups (WSH, LAD). Corey Dickerson is the one Marlins player above all licking his chops, as he’s gone 7-for16 with 2 HR and only 1 strikeout against Morton. The Braves are also coming off a hard-fought series in Philly, and their bullpen was used quite a bit. Look for Miami to take advantage.
Betting Pick: Marlins ML (+105)
